1945–1973

For a generation, productivity and wages rose together more than usual. Stronger unions, public investment, cheaper housing, and expanding education made the future feel accessible to ordinary workers.

1970s–Now

The deal changed

Globalization, financialization, automation, union decline, shareholder primacy, rising housing costs, rising healthcare costs, and education debt changed the bargain. The economy kept growing, but the gains flowed upward.
